TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. This is a standardized test that is specifically used to test the ability of candidates who are non-native speakers of English wishing to Enroll themselves in English-speaking universities. The validity of the TOEFL certificate is of 2 years i.e. once you give the exam and obtain the certificate you can use that for 2 years from the date of issue. Post two years you need to re-appear the exam and obtain a new certificate.

Where can we give the exam? Who accepts the TOEFL score?

TOEFL can be taken anywhere in the world. Candidates have to book a slot at an exam centre as per the availability of slots and give their exams at their convenience. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, TOEFL tests can also be given from home in a proctored manner without going to any exam centre which is even more convenient. The most remarkable fact about this exam is it is available in around 150 countries which is a massive number.

Almost any university around the globe which accepts an English language proficiency score accepts a TOEFL score. To present it statistically 9 out of 10 universities in the USA accept TOEFL scores, 98% of universities in the UK accept TOEFL score and so on. More than 11,000 universities in the world accept TOEFL score as a standard measure of English proficiency.

What exactly is asked in TOEFL?

The exam comprises 4 different section and tests candidate’s English proficiency on these 4 parameters. They being reading, writing, listening and speaking. These specific parameters give an accurate estimate of how well the candidate can survive in an environment where English is the only mode of communication. For example, if you can speak English but not understand it clearly when somebody else is speaking in a foreign accent this implies that even if you are admitted to a foreign university you shall not be able to understand many things like classroom lectures, day to day life conversations with people of that respective country, etc.

Similarly, you should also be proficient in writing and reading due to obvious reasons which are you cannot read and write in your native language in a foreign university. In a nutshell, all 4 skills are equally important and can significantly hamper your stay in a foreign university if you are not proficient in any of them.

Scores and resources to study

After you have given your exam your scores shall be ready within 6 days which is a pretty decent time. The scores that you get can be out of 30 in each section and hence four sections will add up to a total score of 120. The sectional score that you get is divided into 4 categories they are:

  • Advanced (if you score between 24-30)
  • High Intermediate (if you score between 18-23)
  • Low-intermediate (if you score between 4-17)
  • Below low-intermediate (if you score between 0-3)

The interesting thing about the exam is that there is no pass or fail score. It entirely depends on the institution you are applying to as to what their requirement is. For example, you scored 90/120. College A accepts TOEFL score above 80 and college B accepts TOEFL score above 100. So, you are eligible in college A but not in college B.

For preparation, candidates should try to practice as much as possible, listen to audio transcripts, podcasts, movies and talk with peers in English, try to summarize any article and self-record his/her voice to make corrections. Try to read every day to improve vocabulary and understanding of texts.
