Many international students are choosing to study in Australia because of its friendly, laid-back nature, excellent education system, and high standard of living.

Growing Destination

Australia is currently the third most popular destination for international students in the English-speaking world, behind the United States and the UK. Many international students choose to study there because of the cultural diversity, friendly natives, and high quality of education.

Global Recognition

Schools and employers all over the world recognize degrees from Australian schools. Graduates from Australian schools are highly sought after due to the impressive international reputation of the Australian education system. This system is carefully regulated by the Australian government in order to maintain the high standards of education associated with the country.

Cost of Living

Australia’s standard of living is amongst the highest in the world. Living expenses and tuition costs are considerably lower in Australia than they are in the United States and United Kingdom. International students are able to work part time while they study, allowing them to offset their living costs. There is also the possibility of scholarships, which can help to lower the cost of studying in Australia for international students.

Diversity of Education

Institutions in Australia offer a wide variety of courses and degrees, so international students can easily find the school and field that are right for them. The first decision international students have to make when choosing a degree program is which type of school is most catered to their needs and interests. Students can choose between universities, vocational education, and English language training. If necessary, it is easy for students to move between one qualification levels and from one institution to another.

Technology

One of the most appealing aspect of the country for international students is the quality of scientific research. Australia is at the forefront of new technology and innovations. Students who study in Australia can take advantage the country’s impressive technology and research resources.

Work

When most people think of Australia, they see wide open spaces of outback bush, kangaroos, koalas and clean air and water. However, Australia has so much more to offer than just that! Many international students are choosing to study in Australia because of its friendly, laid-back nature, excellent education system, and high standard of living.

Choosing the Right Program

The Australian system offers the international student many options to pursue, from ESL programs to graduate degree programs. Australia also has very strong vocational and technical programs through the TAFE system. Here is a list of the most popular type of programs offered to international students in Australia:

ESL – English as a Second Language

Almost 20% of all international students who come to Australia enroll in an intensive ESL program (known in Australia as ELICOS) to improve their English. This number is increasing as students choose the multicultural atmosphere of Australia to learn English.

There are hundreds of institutions that currently offer English language programs and they vary from place to place. Programs cater to all levels, from beginner to advanced, and there are normally no admission requirements. Students will also take an ESL program as a foundation for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) to prove their level of English. However, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is preferred by many Australian Institutions.
The ESLdirectory.com has an online database of ESL schools – please visit to find a school that’s right for you!

Undergraduate/ Graduate Degrees

There are 39 registered universities in Australia offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. For more, visit our dedicated University Degree program section.

VET – Vocational Education and Training

Australia’s VET system, called TAFE (Techical and Further Education) is a network of institutions that offer programs that are both practical and career-orientated. These programs enable students to begin their career path with study and work all rolled into one program. The main benefit to employers of VET graduates is that they know the individual has practical, work place experience as well as the theoretical background. LIVING IN OZ

Australia is a land of diversity and culture. Living in a different country can be very different and your lifestyle will undoubtedly change. To help you adapt to Australia, we have compiled this resource detailing what life in Australia is like:

Map and Climate

For international students from Europe and North America, the climate in Australia may take some getting used to, as the Australian seasons are opposite to those in Europe and North America. The climate in Australia varies widely depending on the area, as Australia consists of a variety of environments: from beaches to deserts to grazing lands to coral reefs.

People and Culture

Australia is an extremely culturally diverse country. It is varied in its religion, language, history, and art. International students who study in Australia will find themselves studying in a fascinating and diverse environment.

Accomodation

One of the first things international students will have to determine when preparing to study in Australia is where to live. The majority of Australian students live off-campus, through homestay programs, hostels, or rental properties. However, some Australian universities provide their students with housing options, which allow international students to socialize with Australian students during their studies.

Getting Around

Australia is an extremely large country, making transportation very important. The public transportation system is very efficient, and international students should always be able to get to where they need to go, whether by bus, train, bike, or plane.

Money Matters

Tuition in Australia is generally less expensive than tuition in the United States or United Kingdom, but it is still important for international students to budget and be careful with their finances.

Visa Requirements

The Australian Government allows people who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents in Australia to study in Australia. There are several requirements that must be

INSURANCE FOR AUSTRALIA – OSHC

Australia has a special health insurance coverage for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). OSHC is insurance designed to help international students cover the costs of medical and hospital care that they may need while in Australia. Because of these requirements, it is important that international students purchase their Australian international student health insurance prior to departing their home country.

Who Must Purchase OSHC?

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires that all individuals carrying a student visa and their dependents must maintain OSHC for the full duration of their time in Australia.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

Belgians Students
Do not need to purchase OSHC since they are covered under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.

Swedish Students
Do not need to purchase OSHC since they are covered under the National Board of Student Air or by Kammarkollegiet. If not covered by either, then Swedish international students will need to purchase OSHC.

Norwegian Students
Do not need to purchase OSHC since they are covered under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.

Who purchases OSHC?

OSHC is purchased either by your education provider or you can choose your own OSHC approved provider and pay the insurance yourself. It’s important that regardless of who purchases it, that you maintain continuous coverage for the entire stay in Australia. This especially applies for students who are studying through two different institutions who organize the insurance on the international student’s behalf.

Which insurers offer OSHC?

Currently, there are 5 insurers that offer OSHC which can be purchased through your academic institution or directly on your own:

  • Australian Health Management
  • BUPA Australia
  • Medibank Private
  • Allianz Global Assistance (subcontracted by Lysaght Peoplecare)
  • nib OSHC
What does OSHC cover?

The OSHC plan is designed to provide coverage for international students seeking treatment at a doctor’s office, hospital, or for limited prescription drugs. Coverage will vary based on the plan you purchase so it’s important to contact each OSHC provider to ensure that you get the coverage you need.

You will want to ask about waiting periods, exclusions, and other limitations on the plan. The OSHC insurance plan will not cover any treatment arranged in advance of arrival to Australia, treatment to and from Australia, as well as transportation into or out of Australia. OSHC does not typically cover dental, optical or physiotherapy either.

Emergency Evacuation Insurance

Our Emergency Evacuation insurance plan is designed to provide students with access to a worldwide, standalone international evacuation and repatriation plan that provides coverage anywhere outside of your home country. Unlike other evacuation plans, this plan is not loaded with other benefits you do not need, but instead covers the core main benefits:

FINANCIAL AID FOR AUSTRALIA

While studying in Australia, you will need sufficient funds to cover your living expenses (housing, food, clothing, etc) and health insurance, as well as university’s tuition and fees.

So how much money will you need? You can get a general idea about expenses by looking at catalogs or application information provided by the university. Remember, however, that tuition rates vary tremendously. Some universities could be cheaper than others, but this is not always true, so to get the best idea of expenses you need to contact the schools you are interested in.

The cost of living in different parts of Australia also varies. In general, living in urban areas (in or near a big city) is more expensive than living in smaller towns or rural areas. Renting an apartment in a big city can cost twice as much as it does in a smaller town because there is such high demand for housing in large Australian cities. Likewise, food, clothing, entertainment, and other living expenses may be more expensive in a city.

Budgeting is a continuous process. At this stage, work on a “big picture” budget that will include tuition, room and board, transportation, and living expenses. Later you can be more specific, taking into consideration all the additional expenses of moving and settling in.

Remember, you should never count on earning enough from working in Australia to pay your way. See our section on Working in Australia for more complete information.
